The scale is an instrument to measure powder weight in grains. Essential to the reloading process, there are two types available, Balance scale or a digital scale.

In reloading, everything is measured in weight. The measure of mass used is in grains. There is 437.5 grains to an once. Sixteen ounces to a pound. Powder is sold by the pound. Typically a 9x19mm pistol cartridge with a 115gr. bullet will use 4-4.5gr. of powder.

The balance scale is a mechanical devise with incremented counter weights to determine the weight of  powder being measured. Balance scales don’t need batteries or electrical power to operated. A level surface is all is needed. Accuracy is solely up to the manufacturer. Measurements can get as close as a tenth of a grain measurement. A balance scale can be very accurate. Slow to use as waiting on the scale to “settle” to accurately show the balanced weight.
